Cheap Go: Winchester City Walk

Join CheapGo for a free Winchester City Walk for students staying in Southampton over the summer. We will meet at Southampton Central railway station and travel together by train to Winchester. The walk will include Winchester School of Art, Winchester Cathedral and the city centre area. The guided walk will finish at Winchester Cathedral, after which participants may continue exploring Winchester independently.
This is a free event. Students only need to pay for their own return train ticket between Southampton Central and Winchester. Places are limited to 30 participants, so students must register in advance here.
Buying your Train Ticket:
- Here are the instructions for purchasing your train tickets online:
- Visit www.thetrainline.com.
- Enter your departure station (Southampton Central) and Ashurst New Forest as the destination (make sure you choose this station, not the station which is just labelled Ashurst, as this is very far away in Kent!)
- Select travel date 20th June and departure time 09:56 AM, with an open return time.
- Apply any Railcard discounts if you have a Railcard
- Fill in passenger names and details, review your journey details, proceed to payment, and confirm your purchase
- Receive Tickets: Tickets will be sent via email or available for collection at the station.
Alternatively, you can buy the tickets at the train station, please make sure you arrive early so you have enough time before the train leaves.
Meeting point:
North Entrance of Southampton Central railway station, on the Tesco side.
Event schedule:
09:30 — Meet at the North Entrance of Southampton Central railway station.
09:45–10:10 — Travel by train from Southampton Central to Winchester. The exact train time may vary slightly depending on the timetable.
10:10–10:30 — Walk from Winchester station to Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton.
10:30–11:00 — Visit and short stop at Winchester School of Art.
11:00–11:20 — Walk from Winchester School of Art to Winchester Cathedral.
11:20–11:30 — Short introduction at Winchester Cathedral. The guided city walk will then finish, and participants may continue exploring Winchester independently.
Additional information:
Students should wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Before the event, we will send registered students a final email with the joining instructions, meeting point map, train ticket reminder, schedule, weather reminder and emergency contact details.
