We are a friendly bunch of students who love playing badminton casually and competitively!

The University of Southampton Performance Badminton Team is the main competitive badminton club at the University, participating against other universities (BUCS) and local badminton clubs (Winchester and Portsmouth Leagues). We currently have two Men’s and one Ladies’ team for BUCS, with both the Men’s and Ladies’ 1st Teams both competing in BUCS Division 1! We also have a further two Men’s, a Ladies’ and a Mixed Team that compete in the local leagues, offering plenty of opportunity for competition! How and who can join us?

Anyone who is a student of the University of Southampton can join us! 

We run a trial at the beginning of each academic year to select the players best suited to the Performance team. If you are unable to attend the trials please email us, we will get back to you and trial you at another time. Each year we have around 50 places to maintain the quality of training, so if you would like to be part of the team please sign up!

Trials will be on the 29th Sept 2024 from 17:00-20:00 in Jubilee Sports Centre Sports Hall. For the trial, please sign up in advance through the form. The form will close at midday on the date of the trial.

Personal Commitments

• We offer three sessions per week, each lasting two to three hours. One of these sessions is a designated coaching session!
• BUCS games for each team usually take place on Wednesdays and can vary in duration, ranging from a three-hour home game to a full-day away game, depending on the competing university
• The Portsmouth or Winchester League typically occurs on Sundays
• Selected players will also have the opportunity to participate in BUCS Nationals, a nationwide tournament that spans three days. It is important to note that participants are responsible for covering a portion of the travel expenses associated with these games - but it is well worth the experience!!

Expenses

• The membership fee can be viewed under the "membership" tab. It covers coaching fees, feather shuttlecock costs, and travel expenses for BUCS and local league games - it does not cover optional leisure or training trips if you wish to attend.
• The are three categories of membership fees for the academic year. Membership prices for 24/25 will be
  • Year membership + Badminton England Membership: £135
  • Year membership without Badminton England Membership: £100
• An additional £45 per year Sports Pass fee is required for all our members to use and access the University Sports Facilities.

Socials

We organise weekly social events that cater to both drinkers and non-drinkers. Our socials offer a variety of activities, including trips to local restaurants, ice skating, pub crawls, movie nights, post-match drinks, and enjoyable nights at Jesters! Moreover, we make an effort to plan a yearly trip to the All England tournament in Birmingham. Our club also actively participates in Badminton England senior tournaments held across the country, and in the past, we have participated in the International Student Badminton Tournament held in the Netherlands.

Additional Information

• Racket Stringing: Our badminton team endeavours to have at least one stringer each year to offer easy access to stringing services for our players. This year we have a racket stringer team of two people - William Eckworth and Siming Wang!
