Boat (Rowing)
SUBC is one of the largest clubs of Team Southampton, supporting roughly 100 members. Our aim is to develop a community of performance-driven athletes, inspiring growth and achievement at the highest levels. We welcome both experienced and complete beginners, and everyone between. Throughout the year, our members race at small and large events including BUCS, Henley Women's Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta. We are proud to not only be a rowing club, but a family to our members with an active and inclusive social scene to meet people within the club outside of training. SUBC is made up of 7 squads. Senior Women and Senior Men are for those who have rowed before and the Novice Women and Novice Men are the squads for those who are just starting. Our newly introduced Development Women's and Development Men's squads are for those who have a little experience already, and is set in place to help our Novices transition to Senior level. Our Coxes' squad work across the board and are the ones who control the rowers and steer the boats. Typically, the novice squads progress to the senior ones after 1 year of rowing.
We are a very active and sociable club, managing to get out on the water multiple times a week, land training together, and letting our hair down on socials weekly. Water sessions occur 3 times a week (Wednesday afternoons, Saturday and Sunday) or more if tide allows from the Watersports Centre near Wessex Lane Halls. Land training includes our own erg room at Glen Halls and weights occur at Wide Lane. Land training schedules vary by squad so email the captain to find out more!
During Autumn and Winter we go to 'Heads'; a form of longer distance and time trial styled races. After a fun club-wide residential training camp during the Easter holidays, we move onto 'Regattas'; a form of shorter distance and adrenaline-filled side by side racing! Our big events for the year are Women's Head of the River, Men's head of the River, BUCS Regatta, Henley Womens Regatta and finally Henley Royal Regatta!
