Gophers (Hockey)
Welcome to the Gophers SUSU page! Please find us on facebook - Gophers - Medics Hockey, on instagram @gophershc, or tiktok @gophersmedicshockey. Email us at suhhc@soton.ac.uk
Hello! We are the Gophers (aka Medics Hockey), we are a mixed ability club that welcomes anyone who fancies playing hockey, and although we are primarily medics, the society is inclusive to all those studying healthcare degrees such as physios, nurses, OT's etc. We even have many engineers on the team and in fact won the award for most inclusive MedSoc society in 2024.
We play competitive hockey in NAMS - the Medical school national league, as well as Intramural games for those who have never picked up a stick before. If you fancy getting involved in any way, please get in touch through facebook or instagram, or email us at suhhc@soton.ac.uk.
For those interesting in playing hockey, we train 8-10 on Thursdays at Wide Lane.
For socials, we have events most Saturdays so please check the facebook to get involved!
We have been voted MedSoc's social society of the year for many years now and are very proud of this. We have also won NAMS, the national hockey tournament 5 times most recently in the 24/25 season.
All are welcome to come along and try our training sessions and socials. Membership is required for special events such as tournaments and Varsity.
The Committee
All clubs and societies within the Students' Union are run entirely by students. The student committee for Gophers (Hockey) this year are:

Membership Information
These are the current membership fees offered by Gophers (Hockey), although many clubs and societies offer a free period for new members to try out their activities.
| Name | Cost | Valid Period | Details | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard 1 Year Membership (2026/2027) | £40.00 | 01/09/2026 - 30/06/2027 | Normal membership for anyone who isn't a final year medic | |
| Senior citizen OAP Membership (2026/2027) | £25.00 | 01/09/2026 - 30/06/2027 | Final years, we thank you for your service. Your commitment, dedication, longevity and remaining functioning knees serves as inspiration to us all. As a token of our appreciation (and in acknowledgement of the fact that you will be rather absent this year) your membership (as always) is reduced. This membership is for final year medical students only. If you do not fit this criteria, your membership will not be valid and you will have to purchase the correct membership. | |
| Fresher Sem 1 Membership (2026/2027) | £20.00 | 01/09/2026 - 31/12/2026 | Freshers, this one is for you. We understand that £40.00 is quite a lot of money to be asking you to part ways with this early on. To help you come to the conclusion that The Gophers is in fact the best medsoc sports society, we let you pay subs in two halves. One before Christmas and one after. This membership will be valid until the new year and means that you can participate in all our Gopher fun without having to commit £40.00 right at the start of term. If you want to continue to participate in Gopher shenanigans in the new year then you will need to purchase the second term membership. Seniors, if you purchase this membership it will not be valid and you will have to purchase the correct membership. |
