Powerlifting

Southampton University Powerlifting (SUPL) is a welcoming community of students who share a passion for strength training and the sport of powerlifting. We host training sessions four times a week at Team Southampton Gym, Wide Lane, using IPF-approved competition-standard equipment. Whether you’re completely new to lifting or already experienced, we provide tailored training programs and a supportive environment to help you progress. SUPL isn’t just for competitive lifters, it’s for anyone at Southampton Uni who wants to get stronger, meet like-minded people, and push themselves in the gym. If building strength is your goal, SUPL is the society for you!

Taster Sessions at Wide Lane Gym - all abilities welcome:

  • Tuesday 23rd September 2025: 6-9pm (Squat)
  • Friday 26th September 2025: 6-9pm (Bench)
  • Sunday 28th September 2025: 11am-2pm (Deadlift)

Our head and two assistant coaches will be running interactive workshops on the foundations of the 3 main lifts (beginners and more advanced lifters will learn from this). These workshops will run in the first hour of the session, and will be followed by group training. Feel free to stay and use the gym to train with our current members.   _________________________________________________________________________________________________

Southampton University Powerlifting Club welcomes lifters of all levels, whether you're stepping into the world of powerlifting for the first time or bringing a rich background of experience with you. Catering to both new lifters and seasoned powerlifters, SUPL caters for everyone.

Under the expert guidance of our club head coach Nick Michalopoulos — boasting a prestigious background in coaching the Greek Junior National Team — members can trust they are receiving top-notch training advice and form checks.  We are also introducing our new assistant coach Josh Smith from Cold Blood Coaching this year, and our president Amy is also a Level 2 British Powerlifting coach. Our coaches and current members are available at training sessions and on our training group chat for lifting and nutrition advice. Nick and Josh offers free online coaching to all members to follow depending on your individual ability.

With training sessions offered four times a week (accessible using the U1A Unilink Bus Service), there are many opportunities to try out our IPF approved equipment. Since we have four weekly sessions many will not need an additional gym membership, and can train at Wide Lane for a fraction of the cost. Our training session take place on:

  • Tuesday: 6 pm - 9 pm (Team Southampton Gym, Wide Lane)
  • Wednesday: 6 pm - 9 pm (Team Southampton Gym, Wide Lane)
  • Friday: 6 pm - 9 pm (Team Southampton Gym, Wide Lane)
  • Sunday: 11 am - 2 pm (Team Southampton Gym, Wide Lane)

Feel free to attend as many or as few sessions as you like throughout the year, with no pressure to stay for the entire duration. We foster a relaxed environment where you can train at your own pace, with people from all lifting backgrounds to support you.

Our members proudly represent the club at various stages, including internal and external competitions that range from casual to competitive. Highlights of our annual calendar include:

  • Southern Uni Championships
  • Varsity (Southampton vs Portsmouth)
  • British Uni Championships (BUCS)
  • Many other regional and national competitions throughout the year
  • Informal internal mock and official competitions offered to beginners

Beyond the lifting platform, we hold our bi-weekly socials, featuring both drinking and non-drinking events, accessible to everyone.
