Soton Medical Technology Society
The Southampton MedTech Society is a newly formed community driven by medical and technology students. Our core aim is to create a collaborative space where these two disciplines can join, helping educate both sides and share knowledge. Our members have diverse interests spanning from cutting-edge neurotechnology to chronic disease management. We plan to run a variety of activities, including hands-on workshops to develop practical skills, talks from industry professionals and academics, and longer-term projects that will provide valuable experience in the MedTech sector. We're also going to host our own hackathon and conference, as well as attend external ones together. Our society caters to a range of aspirations, from those interested in MedTech consulting and entrepreneurship, to students simply looking to learn more about the academic research, or industry side of the field.

What We Offer
We have a range of opportunities designed to enhance your skills and make a real impact in MedTech:
Flagship Project 📈:
- We have projects suitable for all people interested in MedTech, from introductory-level, to pushing the limits and actively innovating. These provide hands-on experience, allowing you to apply your knowledge to real challenges and see the tangible impact of your work. For 2025/26, we're focusing on prosthetic/artificial limbs, and aim to present our work by the end of the academic year. Don't miss out!
Engaging Workshops 📚:
- We want to equip you with the essentials. These interactive workshops will be tailored to the flagship project we're working on, covering things like coding in C++, using microcontrollers and understanding basic biomechanics.
Hackathons 🧠:
- Put your skills to the test in our exciting competitions. These give you a taste of what it's like to work in a start-up, challenging you to develop and present innovative solutions to complex problems. Working in teams, you'll gain valuable experience in collaboration, critical thinking, and strategic planning, all while competing for exciting prizes. We have been forming and sending off teams to external hackathons, and will hold our own hackathon in Semester 1.
Conference & Guest Speakers 🎤:
- Gain insights from industry experts, researchers, and entrepreneurs through our guest speaker series. These events offer a unique opportunity to learn from the best in the field, ask questions, and engage in meaningful discussions. We're also collaborating with the School of Healthcare Innovation and Enterprise and award-winning doctor Alan Saji to bring you a six-part MIT-style lecture series on Design Thinking and Innovation. All of the above will culminate in a regional conference that we'll be holding in Semester 2.
