MMS is a newly established society set-up by Muslim Medical students which aims to create a platform for Medical students to learn, develop and support each other in practicing their faith and studying medicine.
About us
MMS is a well established society set-up by Muslim Medical students which aims to create a platform for Medical students to learn, develop and support each other in practicing their faith and studying medicine. The society is open to students of all subjects and faiths, and we encourage them all to learn more about Islam and Medicine to become more aware of the sensitive matters around these subjects.
Aims
Our primary focus is to inform fellow medical students, staff, and the public about the challenges a Muslim may end up facing at work e.g., when considering the basic religious necessities required by the individual. This will allow the system to better equip itself to be more inclusive towards Muslims.
We also aim to increase awareness of important medical issues within the community including medical ethics from an Islamic perspective e.g., abortion, organ donation, euthanasia etc.
Furthermore, want to encourage and provide an example for other minorities to step forward and educate everyone on their beliefs. Doing this makes the medical culture more inclusive and diverse, which further improves the medical student experience at Southampton. We have started this work by working together with the Faculty and the newly created Ethnicity Diversity & Inclusivity (EDI) Committee to address some issues e.g., mask fitting for medical students during COVID, the importance of Eid (See our newsletter on our social media for further details)
Finally, we will be running revision sessions, creating & sharing resources, inviting speakers (faith leaders & medical professionals) and holding formal and social events to allow students to network throughout the medical school and hospital.

- The president’s responsibility is to lead and oversee all the initiatives taking place within the organisation.

- Oversee the financing of the Society, set the Society's budget, run the day-to-day financial duty of SMM and maintain the accounts of the Society
