Gaana Society
Gaana is a fun and energetic dance form originating from Tamil culture. We hold weekly sessions where anyone can join, whether they've been dancing for years or have never even heard of Gaana before. We currently perform at numerous shows throughout the year, where the society are able to showcase their talent.
Hello everyone! Welcome to Gaana Society, your home for all things Gaana and Kuthu, whether you’ve never danced before or you’ve been performing for years! All you need is energy and an interest in this vibrant South Indian style of dance. We know some people can feel nervous about trying something new, but we can promise that you’ll quickly fall in love with the music, the moves, and the amazing community we’ve built here.
✨ Weekly Classes ✨
Our sessions run every Wednesday evening, 8–10pm in the MPS (Multi-Purpose Studio, SUSU building). Classes are open to everyone, and our friendly committee and members are always there to help you pick up the steps and enjoy yourself.
✨ Performance Opportunities ✨
A few weeks into Semester 1 we hold auditions for our competitive squad, who go on to represent Southampton at inter-university dance competitions in Semester 2, and sometimes as early as the end of Semester 1 at Kings of Gaana, one of the biggest Gaana competitions in the UK.
But it’s not just competitions; Gaana also performs at events across the year, including Diya Ball, ASOC Ball, Variyaa Boat Party, APNA, and more. No matter your level, there are always opportunities to perform and get involved.

We’re not just about dancing, we’re also about building friendships. From themed socials and meals to club nights and days out, there’s something for everyone throughout the year.
Whether you’re looking to try a new style of dance, perform on stage, compete nationally, or just meet new people, Gaana is the place for you. We can’t wait to see you in class and share the energy and spirit of Gaana with you!
