Welcome to the LGBTQ+ Society!

We are a student-led group that welcomes anyone from any gender or sexual minority. Our aim is to provide an inclusive and safe space for LGBTQ+ students to socialise with one another, allowing them the freedom to discover and express who they are free from judgement, and to engage with activities and campaigns that matter to and make a difference in our community.

We aim to ensure that the highest level of discretion is maintained in order to protect our members who may be unable or unwilling to 'come out' or disclose information about their sexuality or gender. Our society is here for all LGBTQ+ people, no matter their background or personal circumstances!

As a student-led organisation, we are driven by the needs of our members and governed by a committee of annually elected student representatives. If you have any questions you can always contact any of our committee members, or if you need any advice our Welfare Officers are always around for a chat or to point you in the right direction.

How to Get Involved

Our society does not require any registration, and we do not expect members to provide us with any information besides what is absolutely necessary to operate. To get involved, the society has its very own Discord server you can join! This is a safe space for all LGBTQ+ students and allies at the University of Southampton. Please join us for online events, chat, memes, and more.

The Mailing list is used, alongside our Discord server, for announcements of events and other general information about our society and operations. You can sign up for just the kinds of announcements you want, and can unsubscribe at any time. Sign up to our monthly newsletters here!

Safe Space and Confidentiality

We aim to ensure that the highest level of discretion is maintained to protect our members who may be unable or unwilling to disclose information about their sexuality or gender. If you are unsure if an action has the potential to breach discretion don't hesitate to email us at lgbt@soton.ac.uk. Please check out our Safe Space Policy here; we expect all committee and society members to adhere to this policy. 

The LGBTQ+ Society is a part of the University of Southampton Students’ Union (SUSU). As such, we aren’t a data controller, strictly speaking: rather, the Union as a whole is, of which we are a part. That notwithstanding, we handle our data a bit differently to many other parts of SUSU – indeed, we keep it separate from them altogether. This is because we recognise just how important it is that we keep your information safe: we might be handling data that’s very important to keep private, and may be in jeapodary if compromised.

If you need to get in touch with us about our data use, we’d prefer that you contacted us directly in the first instance. However, you can also contact SUSU’s Data Protection Officer, who will be able to forward your enquiry on.

Welfare

If you need any advice, you can contact our Welfare Officers at welfare.lgbt@soton.ac.uk, who are always around for a chat or to point you in the right direction for further help. We love to hear feedback from you, so drop us your suggestions at any time!

We know that coming to an event may be daunting, so if you have any questions, don't know where to go, or would like to meet up with someone beforehand get in touch with us via our website at https://www.sotonlgbt.org.uk/about/, or any other of our social platforms, and someone on committee will be able to help out!
