Renewability and Sustainability Society

The Renewable Engineering Society at UoS. RESUS is a student manufacturing, engineering, and education initiative that centers its activities around renewable and sustainable technologies. We have four technical divisions from a variety of disciplines you can choose from. Our regular workshop sessions run during term time every Thursday at 6pm - 8pm at the Level 3 Workstations in Zepler Labs.

Current Projects

EkkoRacing

We are making our flagship Solar Challenger for the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge! Join our Electrical, Mechanical and Aerodynamics teams in Designing, Testing and Manufacturing our race vehicle. Be it testing designs in the RJ Mitchell wind tunnel, liaising with the Solar Division, fabricating an electrical powertrain or one of our many other projects, there are plenty of opportunities to get stuck in. Whether you're here to learn or to lead, we accept all levels of experience!

 

Solar Division

Currently building the Mini Array, a proof of concept build to solder and encapsulate solar cells in-house. We aim to innovate within these to achieve cost reduction. We also assist other teams in our society with their solar panel designs. We aim to build products that can be integrated into the university landscape and more.

 

Turbine Division

Mini Turbine Alpha is the first wind turbine that will be in our journey to build a full-scale wind turbine. We are building all of our components, even the generator, from the ground up. Currently, MTA is in its manufacturing phase while its generator is being revamped. Eventually, we want to collaborate with Strathclyde Turbine Team to donate our builds to international communities that are not receiving constant power.

 

Solar Flight Division

Our devision is currently developing a solar powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed for continuous, long duration flight. The UAV aims to fly perpetually by harvesting and storing solar energy. This requires a lightweight, aerodynamic design and a complex electrical system. 

Equipt with a camera payload, the platform captures real-time images. Which are processed using AI-driven object detection and image analysis. 

 

Community

Fairness and communication are important themes in our community. We always want to attribute everyone's contribution and work as transparently and clearly as possible. Whether you are casually interested in green technology or a renewables expert, there is a lot of fulfilling work to do and have fun together! We also run regular socials :)

We have regular general workshop sessions where all the society comes together and focused team workshops which are determined by the division leaders. Please join our social media channels and email list via membership to keep up with all the details!

Daniel Reynolds
President
  • President shall oversee the organization and management of the Group and the Committee as a whole; ensure any officers’ accountability to Members, the Committee, and the Students’ Union; and represent the Group to all external interests by taking the role of the figurehead for the Society.
Daniel Hughes
Treasurer
  • Treasurer shall oversee the financing of the Group, set the Group's budget, and maintain the accounts of the Group. All documents are to be ready for examination by this officer's efforts.
Atlas Radford
Welfare Secretary
  • The Welfare Officer shall be responsible for the mental and physical wellbeing of all members of the society. Their primary function is to organise and lead the support services offered by the society.
Nik Pedzik
Communications Secretary
  • The Communications Secretary shall be responsible for how the Society is presented online and in printed media. They will be responsible for maintaining all social media activity for the Society, and ensuring a consistent brand. This role also consumes the previous role of webmaster. The webmaster shall create and maintain the online presence of the society. This includes any social media pages (including professional channels) and the official webpage of the group. They shall act as an online moderator where it is relevant in such channels. They shall maintain the official website along with the President and Vice-President Engagement.

  • To assist the President

Vice President Engagement
  • The Vice-President Engagement shall act alongside the President and Vice-President Operations in managing the Committee and representing the Society. They will share the responsibilities of the President with the Vice-President Operations if the President is unavailable. In addition to this, they shall be responsible for overseeing the member facing social side of the Committee. They shall work with the Social Secretary, Events Officer, Sports Officer, Welfare Officer, and the Marketing Officer in the smooth running of all of the Society's events. They shall ensure that the society has an up-to-date Health and Safety Policy, and that all reasonable action is taken to comply with it. They shall also work on increasing participation rates within the Society.

Vice President Operations
  • The Vice President Operations assists the President in managing day-to-day operations: -Coordinating division proceedings, including taking progress reports -Overseeing the engineering of the society and ensuring that appropriate risk assessments have been completed and are followed -Leading specific projects /initiatives assigned by the President -Coordinating logistics for society events and activities -Working with the Secretary, Treasurer, Head of Skill Development, Division Leads, and any General Members or Consultants to ensure the society’s operations run smoothly -Liaising with staff and sponsors when the President is unavailable -Filling in for the President with the VPE when the President is absent

  • Deal with workshop administration.

These are the current membership fees offered by Renewability and Sustainability Society, although many clubs and societies offer a free period for new members to try out their activities.
